Butch Martin’s ‘People, Places & Mules’ may be an unusual album title. Topped-and-tailed with a sense of fun, he calls his music ‘cowgrass’! But well, why not? Throbbing in colorful word-pictures of the West that are in still strangely sync with the modern rhythm-of-life, Butch’s ballads ring with the passions of love, pride, family and life itself. This intriguing country & western audio collection from Butch is shamelessly ‘down-home’ featuring him unquestioningly in sentimental, philosophical and humorous moods. Spontaneous session sounds of quality grace this solo artist’s delightful platter! So well done to the producer of Butch’s fine competent performance here of some known (a la Phil Harris and Kingston Trio) and some unknown repertoire. To my mind, Charlie Daniels’ ‘Wyoming On My Mind’ is a diamond-song to be cherished.
Butch Martin and the Rogue Valley Riders – People, Places & Mules - A fine album full of great traditional and western swing music and singing. Classy, enjoyable singing from Butch, who has his own unique sincere style, putting all tracks over really well including appealing story type songs. High quality music provided by very talented musicians both compliments and supports the singing.
Cowboy music? So What! I’ve never stopped playing this concept western gem in the car since I’ve received it. No, I’m not returning to a second childhood. There’s nothing trite or trashy about this balladeering venture. Sure it is sentimental, but these are quality tales here that are a truly appropriate celebration of western lifestyle by a great emerging talent fronting top class sessioners. ‘Come Ride The Wagon’ is an absolute gem. A wholesome concept that is a welcome return to a tried and tested common theme.
Talk about a smooth singer! Butch martin on his new album “Come Ride The Wagon” is one smooth artist in the same category with Don Edwards and R. W. Hampton. This is one really enjoyable album with outstanding songs like “Mojave”, “The Everlasting Hills of Oklahoma” and “Cheyenne Wind”. A good selection of songs that showcases this man’s talents.
